GATE CITY — When you’ve waited 25 years for the biggest win in your program’s history, what’s a little overtime?
A 1-yard scoring plunge by Matthew Chapman in the opening possession of OT lifted John Battle to a 21-14 Clinch Mountain District win over Gate City at Legion Field on Friday night.
The Trojans (7-0, 2-0) came in ranked fourth in The Associated Press Group A Poll. Even so, Friday was a history-haunted matchup for Battle, which hadn’t beaten Gate City since 1987.
It never happened before, or since. And the Blue Devils (1-5, 1-1) were grimly resolved not to let it happen again.
In hindsight, Adam Jones’ game-capping PAT kick proved unnecessary. But only by virtue of two huge end zone breakups by Battle defensive backs during Gate City’s subsequent overtime possession.
Blue Devils quarterback Nick Bowen passed for 210 yards in regulation.
“We fought hard the whole game. I’ve never seen that much heart out of my team before,” Bowen said. “We came up a little bit short, but I couldn’t be more proud of our guys.”
