No matter what you fancy, chances are, you’ll find it next weekend in Wise, Va.
With the renovated Wise County Courthouse serving as a backdrop, downtown Wise will be a hub of activity as more than 100 arts, crafts, antiques and food vendors roll in for the 34th annual Wise County Famous Fall Fling, Oct. 13 and 14, on Main Street.
The main stage, situated on the courthouse lawn, will welcome more than a dozen performers during the two-day event, which also includes children’s activities, craft demonstrations, a health fair and various contests.
Nearly half a dozen artisans and craftsmen will showcase their skills in wood, pottery, art, photography, candles, antiques, Native American Crafts, traditional Appalachian crafts, coal memorabilia, corn shuck dolls and gold panning.
The theme for this year’s event is “Magic of the Mountains,” and organizers have worked hard to make sure the festival lives up to its billing.
Even before the Famous Fall Fling officially gets under way, a series of pre-Fling festivities will get the party started. Activities include: “Let Freedom Ring” — A Salute to American Veterans and the Little Miss Wise Fall Fling Pageant, Oct. 6; Turning 360 Fashion Show at 3 p.m., Oct. 7; a Senior Citizen Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Oct. 10 at Big Glades Square, followed by a musical performance by Taylor Cochran at 6 p.m.; Paint-a-Can at 3:30 p.m., Oct. 11 at the Wise Primary School, followed by the Fall Fling Talent Show at 6 p.m. on the Big Glades Stage and a photography/art reception at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Hall; and on Oct. 12., a Community Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the grassy lot below Wise Baptist Church, First Bank & Trust’s Customer Appreciation Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the bank, Trinity United Methodist Church’s annual spaghetti supper from 4 to 7:30 p.m., and the Wise County Career Tech Fall Fling Open House from 4 to 6 p.m.
The Fling’s official opening ceremonies, hosted by Ray Wells, will get under way at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 13 on the main stage, with live music continuing throughout the weekend.
