Innovation Academy to host If I Had a Hammer event

September 25th, 2012 4:13 pm by Staff Report

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The region’s first STEM middle school – the Innovation Academy of Northeast Tennessee – is promoting a new hands-on technique that teaches math through a system of real-world applications.

Innovation Academy will host “If I Had A Hammer” on Wednesday, September 26, at 9 a.m. where students will pick up a hammer and put their math skills to work.

The media are invited to attend.

Twenty-five fifth grade students and 20 seventh grade students from Innovation Academy will begin using “Hammer Math” curriculum to build a small house using applied mathematics.

This small, colorful structure will be built with real construction materials and tools such as hammers, tape measures, drills and safety goggles.  When finished, the house will be large enough for the entire class to fit inside.

If I Had A Hammer Inc. was created by former carpenter Perry Wilson, whose teaching system typically results in a 64 percent increase in math scores.

“We ask students to imagine their dream homes, then help them design and build architectural models using Hammer Math,” said Wilson. “Teachers are amazed at how quickly their students learn when they apply math to the real world.”

The Hammer Math curriculum compliments the goals of STEM schools by integrating science, technology, engineering and math - allowing multi-academic disciplines to complement one another in an interdisciplinary approach by promoting real-world problem solving applications.

“Innovation Academy is honored not only to provide this award-winning program to the young people of our region, but also to host the program's celebrated founder,” said Innovation Academy Principal Sandy Watkins. “The event allows students to work as a team in order to reason their way through problems of design and purpose, promoting effective communication.”

The student’s work will be on display at the Straight to the Top Education Conference at the MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort & Convention Center on Friday, September 28, 2012.

Innovation Academy of Northeast Tennessee is a platform school of the Tennessee STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Innovation Network and is located at 149 Brookside School Lane in Kingsport.
