Kingsport DUI suspect drives through yard, into parked vehicle

Elijah H. Hankins, 20, of 5423 Orebank Road

A 20-year-old Kingsport man has been arrested after allegedly driving his Jeep into oncoming traffic, a utility pole and through the yard of a residence, striking a parked vehicle.

Elijah H. Hankins, of 5423 Orebank Road, is charged with reckless aggravated assault, driving under the influence and underage consumption. At 5 p.m. Saturday police were called to 3625 Orebank Road, where Hankins' 2008 Jeep Laredo had entered the yard, through hedges and struck a Honda CRV parked in the driveway.

A Kingsport police arrest report says Hankins admitted to drinking beer earlier in the day. He was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment of injuries, then booked into jail.

Further investigation revealed that prior to striking the parked Honda Hankins had hit multiple other objects. While traveling west on Orebank he allegedly struck a mailbox, then entered the lanes of oncoming traffic to swipe the driver's side of a Nissan Frontier. A police report says the driver of the pickup, a 50-year-old female, suffered injuries in the incident.

Hankins is alleged to have then ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a utility pole. Police say his Jeep then exited the left side of the road to hit a metal sign, continuing into the yard and driveway where he finally stopped and was arrested.
