Jesse Jackson calling for investigation in shooting death of handcuffed man in patrol car

August 22nd, 2012 2:18 pm by Associated Press

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Rev. Jesse Jackson is calling on the Justice Department to investigate the death of a 21-year-old man who was shot in the head while handcuffed in the back of a patrol car in Arkansas.

Jackson on Wednesday also criticized the explanations that authorities have given about how Chavis Carter was shot.

Jackson's comments come days after police in Jonesboro, Ark., released an autopsy report ruling Carter's death a suicide. The report also said Carter had methamphetamine and other drugs in his system.

Police have been facing criticism after they said officers searched Carter twice but didn't find a gun found before he was fatally shot in the back of a patrol car July 28 while his hands were cuffed behind him.

A police spokesman didn't immediately return a message.
