KINGSPORT — A Kingsport woman is facing assault and burglary charges after allegedly breaking into a residence early Sunday morning and attacking a man who was in the bedroom watching television at the time.
Kingsport police responded to 1302 Camellia Ave. around 1:13 a.m. in reference to a stabbing.
Upon arrival, they spoke with Stephen Lewis, who told police he was in his bedroom with a friend watching a movie when he was startled by the sound of someone inside his home.
“Mr. Lewis stated that he stood up and observed Billie Jo Shelton standing in the bedroom doorway,” Kingsport Police Department Detective Cpl. Frank Light said in his report. “Lewis stated he observed that she was armed with a pair of scissors. Shelton was yelling and screaming at Lewis, and before he knew it she was on top of him and the witness had to split the two apart.”
Light said the fight spilled out into the living room/dining room area, where Lewis tried to force Shelton to leave.
Shelton allegedly swung at Lewis with the scissors and Lewis managed to block the blow with his left forearm, but the scissors punctured his arm.
Shelton then left the home, Light said.
Responding officers were unable to locate Shelton. Lewis was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment of his stab wound.
“A photograph of Shelton was obtained and shown to Lewis and the witness, and both positively identified her as the female who had entered the home unannounced and who had stabbed Mr. Lewis,” Light stated in his report.
“Mrs. Shelton was later located at Model City Apartments where she was arrested and charged with the offenses of aggravated burglary and aggravated assault,” Light said in the report.
There was no information available regarding a possible motive for the attack.
As of Sunday, Shelton remained held in the Kingsport City Jail pending arraignment Monday morning.
