One suspect arrested, another one sought in bottle 'bomb' explosion at Kingsport apartments

Justin M. Roberts, 21.

KINGSPORT — One man was arrested Thursday in connection with a small explosion outside a Kingsport apartment complex, with police currently searching for a second suspect.

A Kingsport Police Department arrest report states the incident occurred shortly after midnight Monday at Country Gardens Apartments, 124 Bloomingdale Pike. In the parking lot police discovered a plastic bottle had been filled with a flammable liquid to construct an explosive device.

Residents of the apartment complex heard the contraption explode and exited their residences. One witness, according to the report, observed two men “climbing off the balcony” of a nearby apartment.

The KPD Bomb Squad and detectives responded to the scene. They checked the balcony in question, noticing the door to the apartment was open. When police entered to check if there was a break-in, a woman walked from a bedroom.

The report says she consented to a search of the residence, where several items consistent with the homemade explosive were found. She allegedly told police that two men, Justin M. Roberts, 21, and Taylor S. Weiss, 20, were previously at her apartment.

An arrest warrant was obtained for each suspect, with Roberts, of 692 Dale St., Kingsport, turning himself in on Thursday evening. Police are still searching for Weiss, of 5008 Lake Forest Drive. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Kingsport police at 229-9429.

Each suspect is charged with a weapons law violation and felony count of reckless endangerment. KPD Detective Tommy Arnold said the suspects aren’t believed to have had any seriously malicious intentions, yet the volatile nature of the device could have inadvertently harmed someone.
