Visitors to Break Interstate Park now have a new way to beat the heat.
Splash! in the Park, the new water park facility, is now open at Breaks, an interstate park located on the Kentucky-Virginia border. The facility is anchored by a 4,000 square-foot beach-entry leisure pool and four water slides. A fifth water slide is slated to be added in mid-July. There is also a current channel, in-pool basketball and volleyball areas, a splash pad, and other water features, as well as a party pavilion, and all new buildings including a concession area, bathrooms and showers.
The water park will also offer a new alternative for parties and events. Birthday parties may be planned during the day while the facility is open to the public; and parties or corporate events may also be scheduled after hours so that a group can have private access to the facility.
The $2.3 million facility replaces the park’s previous pool, which was permanently closed last fall. It can be found in the same location as the former pool near Laurel Lake.
"Three years ago, we saw the closure of our old pool was both inevitable and close at hand," said park superintendent Matthew O’Quinn. "At that time, we had to decide what direction to go in. There were a few different options - ranging from resurfacing the old pool or building a new pool, to building something completely different. The water park facility was certainly the most expensive and difficult of those choices to shoot for."
O’Quinn noted that, ultimately, the decision was made to go that route after seeing feasibility studies that showed water park facilities are in higher demand by consumers and therefore attract more tourists.
"While this is a one-of-a-kind recreational facility that will benefit children and families in the coalfields, it is also a strong economical development project that will attract more tourism dollars to our region," he said.
Still, it was not an easy task to see the facility come to fruition.
"Given that Breaks Park only receives 17 percent of its funding from the states of Virginia and Kentucky, being able to fund any new capital improvement project is extremely difficult," said O’Quinn, "But we wanted to do something that children would enjoy; we wanted to offer a state-of-the-art facility. We dug in to secure funding and although it was a three-year process from the time we began seeking funds until the project was completed, seeing all these kids’ excited faces makes it completely worth it."
Splash! will be open daily from 10 am to 6 p.m. through Labor Day, with the exception of July 16-18 when the park will be closed for the installation of the fifth water slide. Reservations for parties and corporate events may be made, beginning on Monday, for events taking place after July 1. For more information about parties, call 276-865-4413 ext. 3225.
