Player Profile: Santana Bishop, Gate City

Being the younger sister of former Gate City track and field star Ashton Bishop, the Lady Blue Devils' Santana Bishop probably can't avoid being tagged "The Quiet One" when contrasted with her entertainingly extroverted elder sibling. Never the shy one, these days Ashton is working in front of a camera as a newscaster with WKPT-TV in Kingsport.

Santana may seem silently serene in comparison with her record-setting sister, but the rising senior has managed to make quite a bit of noise as an outside hitter on Gate City's vaunted volleyball team. She joined teammate Erica Fugate as a second-team selection on the 2011 VHSCA All-Group A squad. Santana has high hopes of helping to lead the Lady Devils on another bid for state tournament glory in the upcoming '12 campaign.

She recently attended the Spring Jubilee in Radford to support her friends on the eventual state champion Gate City girls tennis squad. Times-News sports writer George Thwaites caught up with her for a short Q & A session. Here's what she had to say:

Who is your favorite athlete, past or present?

I like Michael Phelps, actually. I like him because he's a really strong athlete.

What is your favorite movie?

Mean Girls. That's my favorite movie. It's a really well-made movie and it's very funny. Rachel McAdams is one of my favorite actresses.

What is your best athletic memory?

When we won a state championship in volleyball my freshman year.

What is your worst athletic memory?

This past season, when we lost (in the state quarterfinals) at Auburn because their floor was all oily. That was terrible. Every time I remember that, it's bad.

If you were hosting a dinner party, who would be your three ideal guests?

Justin Bieber, Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams.

In a movie about your life, who would play you?

I couldn't really say. Victoria Justice? (giggles) I don't know.

What is your favorite academic subject?

I really like science.

What do you think you might do for a career?

I think I might be a pediatric nurse, or something in that field.

Why are you interested in that line of work?

As far back as I can remember, I've always liked going to see the nurseries in the hospitals. I think I would really enjoy being around newborn babies every day.
