Golf tournament to benefit cancer support group

June 21st, 2012 10:57 pm by staff report

BIG STONE GAP — The second annual Harold Lester Memorial Golf Tournament is set for Aug. 10 at Lonesome Pine Country Club in Big Stone Gap. All proceeds from the event will support the Harold Lester Memorial Fund of the Mountain Laurel Cancer Support and Resource Center operated by Mountain Empire Older Citizens Inc.

Proceeds raised at last year’s inaugural fund-raising golf tournament were $9,000 and have been used to help meet many unexpected needs of cancer patients not addressed by other cancer resources.

Ever dollar raised at the golf tournament directly assists cancer patients in Southwest Virginia. Many lives have been touched as a result of the Harold Lester Memorial Fund, but many more persons are diagnosed with cancer each month.

When Lester lost his battle with cancer, his family and friends hoped to find a way to honor his memory while helping others in need as a memorial to the devotion he embodied caring for and assisting thousands of people during his lifetime.

In his memory, Lester’s family and friends established the memorial fund as part of MEOC’s cancer support center, which assists patients in Lee, Scott and Wise counties and the city of Norton.

Lester retired from the Wise County school division after 38 years of service in the county’s public education system. Larry Joe Hill, a retired assistant county school superintendent, called Lester “one of the most ethical men I ever worked with. He was very, very competent. He knew his job, and he knew how to get things done. He had great people skills and did things in a way he didn’t take credit for himself for the things he accomplished.”Lester also served a term on Big Stone Gap Town Council. Current Councilman Leonard Rogers said Lester was one of the best council members he ever served with.

“I thought he did a super great job in everything, and he gave everything a lot of thought before he made his decisions,” Rogers said.

There are several ways to participate in the golf tournament as either a player, company sponsor or individual sponsor. Sponsorship levels include Level 1, four-person team, hole sponsor at $475; Level 2, four-person team, company name on the tourney board at $400; Level 3, hole sponsor, company or individual name on a tee box, $100; Level 4, individual participation and the tournament committee will place the individual on a team; and Level 5, a donation of any amount as a business or individual sponsor.

A mulligan package is included in each sponsorship level.
