Agency Spotlight: Mountain Region Speech and Hearing Center

June 20th, 2012 2:16 pm by Staff Report

Each month, Sunday Stories profiles a member agency of United Way of Greater Kingsport. This month's agency spotlight features Mountain Region Speech and Hearing Center (MRSHC).

About the Agency:  Mountain Region Speech and Hearing Center (MRSHC) is a not for profit agency founded in 1974 by the Junior League and Sertoma Club of Kingsport. It is located at 301 Louis Street, Suite 101, in the V.O. Dobbins Building behind the Toy Reid Eastman Employee Center.

Our mission is to provide the infants, children and adults of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia with the highest quality and most cost effective evaluation, treatment and education for speech, language, hearing and swallowing disorders. It is our mission to provide these services regardless of an individual's ability to pay.

While MRSHC is not a free clinic, there are some scholarships available to assist the uninsured or underinsured patients unable to afford some or all of their costs incurred. We are happy to work with our patients to develop a realistic payment plan when necessary.

We receive donations from individuals, civic clubs and corporations, which are used to purchase equipment, supplies, or to apply toward scholarships. These donations make a difference in the lives of our patients. It is our desire that our work continues to inspire donors to continue to support the mission of MRSHC.

Volunteer Needs: Mountain Region Speech and Hearing Center is in search of volunteers who would be willing to set aside a few hours each month to help out around our center. No speech, language or hearing background is required. Volunteers can support MRSHC in many ways, including administrative support, organizing supply closets, by hosting supply drives, decorating bulletin boards, working on carpentry projects, and assisting with special events. We understand that your time is valuable and we can work with volunteers to meet their interests and their schedules. Please contact Mavis Spivey by calling 423-246-4600 or stop by the front office for more information on volunteering.

Agency Wish List: MRSHC always needs copy paper (white and colored), copier cartridges, paper towels, hand sanitizer, Kleenex, dry erase markers (all colors), crayons, coloring books, glue sticks, staples, file folders and pens.
