Player Profile: Morgan Miles, Lee High

To every thing there is a season, and to every season there is a sport.

Lee High’s Morgan Miles, who is wrapping up her senior year in Ben Hur, is a gifted and versatile athlete who achieved just the right amount of balance in her life as a three-sport varsity letter-winner over a four-year period. She has been a vital contributor for the Lady Generals in volleyball, basketball and track.

She had aptitude for other sports as well, but didn’t want her loyalties divided.

“In middle school I played softball but in high school I didn’t at first know whether I wanted to run track or play softball. I knew I wanted to be committed to just one,” Miles said.

Softball’s loss was track and field’s gain. In addition to competing in all five field events, Miles earns points for the Lady Generals in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the 4x400 relay. Every now and then, she’s run the 200 dash. She’s a team player: It’s all about the points.

Miles helped the Lady Generals volleyball team attain regional appearances and played on the Lee High girls basketball squad. Basketball is her favorite sport. As a freshman and sophomore, she played on both Lady Generals teams that made it to the VHSL Group A Final Four in Richmond.

Sports Writer George Thwaites recently caught up with Miles for a short Q&A session. Here’s what she had to say:

Who is your favorite athlete, past or present and why?
Probably Candace Parker, because she played for Tennessee and because of how inspiring and good she is.

What is your favorite movie, and why?
“Facing the Giants.” That movie is really inspiring, how they make it so far and they’re such a small team.

What is your best athletic memory?
Definitely going to the state two years in a row in basketball. That’s my favorite memory.

Your worst athletic memory?
I think it was my freshman or sophomore year, at Virginia High. I fell on the hurdles and hurt my knee. They had to wheel me in a wheelchair. It was more embarrassing than hurt. So that was probably the worst.

In a movie about your life, who would play you?
I like Reece Witherspoon.

If you were hosting a dinner party, who would be your three ideal guests?
Michael Jordan, Candace Parker and Julia Roberts.

If you could have one superpower, which would you choose?
Oh, to fly. You can get so high above and get away from everybody. All by yourself.

Do you have any superstitions or pregame rituals?
More in basketball, and our whole team is like that. If we win we wear the same socks and same hairbows and we do the exact same things we did the game before. We do the exact same things.

Do you have a nickname?
They call me “Big Mo” sometimes. I don’t know why.

What is your favorite non-sports activity?
I like to ride horses. I have a paint horse.

So you’re a cowgirl?
Yeah (laughs) kind of, I guess. I’ve always wanted to (barrel race) but never got around to it. We have a horse that used to be a barrel horse, but I never did that with her. Some in my family don’t like running the horses so we just kind of walk around. But I like running them. I never jump with them, but they’ve jumped stuff on their own, like jumping a creek whenever they felt like it.

And you just hang on.
Yeah. (laughing) I just hang on.
