Davis Brothers has approximately 150 employees with 38 trucks on the road and six full-time salesmen.
Rickey Davis started out helping his uncle in the roofing business when he was only 12 years old. Upon reaching adulthood, Davis and his uncle, Lloyd Ruble Davis, decided to start a roofing business together. Unfortunately, just about a year after they started the business, Lloyd Ruble Davis passed away and Rickey made the decision to go out on his own in the roofing business. He had a passion for the work and desire to form his own company in honor of the skills and work ethic his uncle had passed down to him. Rickey asked his two younger brothers, Dale and Gene, to join him and Davis Brothers Roofing was formed.
Starting the business was rough the first few years, but one day Davis was driving around in his $50 pickup truck and noticed shingles off of a house in a west Kingsport neighborhood. Rickey decided to stop and ask the owner, Jack Bisceglia, if he could replace the singles on his roof. It was this spur-of-the-moment decision that made a pivotal turn in Davis’ roofing business.
Davis asked if Bisceglia had anyone to replace his roof and, as luck would have it, the contracted person had never shown up. Davis offered to put half the shingles on for Bisceglia with the understanding that if he didn’t like it, Bisceglia would not have to pay for it. Davis did a great job and was offered the opportunity to return the next day. A good friendship started between the two men and Bisceglia, a builder in the area, helped Davis get his start in the roofing business.
Twenty-three years later, Davis Brothers has approximately 150 employees with 38 trucks on the road and six full-time salesmen.
The Davis Brothers have traveled all over the country to attend certification classes and seminars on roofing for residential and commercial properties. They primarily cover Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. They also contract with several insurance companies and residential/commercial contractors.
Bill Yates, owner of Yates Insurance Agency in Kingsport said, "I have worked with Davis Brothers professionally and personally. I have never had a problem with their roofing and Rickey is one fine person to work with in this business. Honesty is one of his best qualities and everyone at Davis Brothers is cooperative and helpful to work with during the process."
Along with the roofing business, they also own a metal fabrication shop and a roll-off dumpster service.
Davis Brothers Roofing covers everything from residential and commercial to industrial roofing.
Rickey Davis credits his supporting family for the business success. Davis’ daughter, Kari Davis Roberts; son-in-law, Mardy Roberts; and daughter-in-law, Maranda Roberts Davis; all work in the business together.
"We stick together, through the good and bad times in the business," said Davis.
They cover all types of roofing, everything from shingles, metal, radius panels to cedar shakes. There is not any type of roofing that Davis Brothers has not worked with and they provide comprehensive roofing needs.
Second- and third-generation family members are ready to step in and keep the family business going for years to come. Rickey Davis’ grandsons, Kade, Scooter and Austin, as well as his granddaughter, Cheyenne, have already expressed an interest in learning the ropes of the roofing business when the time is right.
Future expansions include their recently-opened commercial office in Rogersville. They have state-of-the-art software for their commercial business and are set up for Internet blueprints and will be bidding for commercials jobs in a three-state area.
