Player Profile: Tabby Arwood, Lebanon

One of these days, Lebanon's Tabby Arwood will run her first marathon .  She eagerly anticipates her first 26.2-miler. But it will have to wait. For the time being, she has other races to run.

Arwood is a two-time Clinch Mountain District cross country champion with fourth and third-place finishes in the Group A state meet. In track and field, she's won three CMD titles in the 3,200 meters and taken the 1,600 district crown two out of three times. She's finished as high as third at the Group A state track and field championships in Salem.

She's a good runner at high school distances, but at double her longest high school track and field race, this endurance queen really starts to shine.

She's taking an athletic scholarship to King College, where she'll run indoor and outdoor track for the Tornado. A team-spirited athlete, Arwood will glady run in any event she's assigned. But best guess is that the 5,000-meter run will become her new best event.

During a recent track meet, Arwood took a short Q&A with Times-News sportswriter George Thwaites. Here's what she had to say:

Who is your favorite athlete, past or present and why?

Probably coach Bob (Bob Weatherly). My coach. Because he inspires me. He ran for Virginia High and then went into the military. He knows how to work with us and can run. He can do it all.

What is your favorite movie, and why?

Footloose. I like the dancing.

What is your best athletic memory?

Qualifying for the indoor nationals and going to them in New York this winter. I ran the 5,000. It was awesome.

Your worst athletic memory?

Probably breaking my foot during a race my freshman year. And then I ran with it broke for nine weeks.

In a movie about your life, who would play you?

I don't know. That's hard. Someone who's determined and likes to run. Maybe Reece Witherspoon. Yeah. I like her. She's one of my favorites. She's a  good one.

If you were hosting a dinner party, who would be your three ideal guests?

Kara Goucher, Shalane Flannagan, and Steve Prefontaine.  They're all runners. And, yes, I do like pasta.

If you could have one superpower, which would you choose?

To fly. Even though you would think, run.  Actually, no. It would be to be fast at the end of a race. Because I never have a kick.

Do you have any superstitions or pregame rituals?

I usually wear the same socks and underwear and stuff like that. So yes, I'm superstitious.

Do you have a nickname?

My name is Tabitha. But people call me "Tabby."

What sport other than running do you enjoy watching?

I usually watch college basketball.
