Just down the road in Tennessee’s second oldest town, Historic Rogersville, you’ll find a family-owned business with an equally rich history that’s been serving its customers' needs for over 60 years.
Otis Home Center has evolved from two general stores that patriarch J.O. Henard and his son Albert (A.E.) opened in Klondike, Tenn. During the Great Depression, A. E. started a lumber company and moved the operation to Rogersville. He expanded again in 1951 and A. E. Henard Home Supply was formed. A. E.’s son, Otis and Otis’ wife, Dorothy, opened Otis Home Center in 1961. Now Dorothy, her son, Philip, and his family carry on that tradition.
"I’ve worked here since I was a young boy and now run the day-to-day business along with my wife Karen and son Jaden," fourth-generation manager Philip Henard said.
Otis Home Center specializes in brand name furniture, appliances and bedding. The extensive inventory is impeccably displayed in their 68,000-square-foot Gallery Showroom for manufacturers such as Broyhill, Kincaid, Ashley, England, Lexington, Leather Italia, Sealy, Whirlpool, Maytag, Frigidaire and Samsung, just to name a few.
"Basically, everything we have in the store is top-of-the-line. We offer quality, selection, personal attention and service," said Henard, "especially service."
The knowledgeable and friendly sales staff at Otis Home Center keeps on top of the current trends, colors and fabrics by frequenting the Furniture Market in High Point, N.C.
"There’s not a lot of family run furniture stores around anymore. We have a big following because we can offer more individual styles and cater to a customer’s specific wants and needs, over what some of the larger stores do, and that’s what makes us so unique. Our inventory is always evolving and changing," said Henard.
The fine folks at Otis Home Center know that room design reflects a patron’s taste and personality, and if you come into the store and can’t find exactly what you are looking for they will gladly order it for you.
"A big part of our business is special orders. A person wants what they want, we easily and frequently accommodate custom orders," Henard imparted.
They also offer in-home design and staging for those who may prefer a professional’s touch.
"We can prep a home for new furniture or take what a customer already has to complete a look," said Victoria Mullins, buyer, saleswoman and floral designer.
"We have a great line of exquisite accessories that set the mood for any room," she added. "You’ll get quality furniture at a great price and create an ambiance and character that you can feel."
Otis Home Center offers free delivery and set up and also has in-store financing for your purchase.
"Nobody beats our price on furniture, appliances or bedding. We have a motto: 'If We Can’t Meet 'Em or Beat ‘Em on the Same Style and Model, We’ll Give it to You' and we haven’t given anything away yet," Henard said with a smile. "That’s a promise the so-called big box stores won’t give you."
If that’s not reason enough to visit, going on right now is one of Otis Home Center’s biggest promotions, the May tent sale.
"Absolutely everything in the store is on sale. When the tents go up, the prices come down," Henard likes to say.
From primitive to modern, retro to exotic, and every style in between, let Otis Home Center be your one-stop shop for all your furniture, appliance and bedding needs.
"I think my father would be very proud of us carrying on the family business and I think my grandfather would be too. It’s a lot different than when they started, but we enjoy maintaining that family tradition," Henard beamed.
