Cody Cain, a junior at Thomas Walker, is one of the fastest athletes in Southwest Virginia. He is also likely to be one of the region's most-watched football players during the 2012 season. After rushing for nearly 1,600 yards for the Pioneers in 2011, Cain is already getting looks from Division I programs such as North Carolina State, Marshall, Morehead State, Wake Forest and Maryland.
"I'd really like to play football somewhere. I like football quite a bit," said Cain, whose goal is to rush for 2,000 yards this season.
After the DC TC Relays at Dobyns-Bennett, Cain moved to No. 3 on the Times-News Relays checklist in the 100-meter dash. His third place time of 10.93, behind D-B's Malik Foreman and University High's John Patrone, is all the more impressive considering he pulled a hamstring during the race. Hopefully he'll be mended in time for this Friday's T-N Relays, where his presence in the 100 and 200 should raise the stakes for even more dramatic races.
Despite his star status, Cain's attitude is that of a blue-collar team player. He is a thoroughbred sprinter; his coach thinks the 200 dash may be an even stronger event for him than the 100. But rather than rest on his laurels, he's eager to help out his teammates by hustling up points in the field events - long jump, triple jump, high jump, and the shot put and discus when possible. He's not a one-trick pony.
At a recent track meet, Cain took part in a short Q&A with Times-News sports writer George Thwaites. Here's what he had to say:
Who is your favorite athlete?
I like Michael Jordan, when he played basketball. Because he worked so hard to get where he was at. He came a long way.
What is your favorite movie, and why?
Remember the Titans. It's got great meaning.
What's your best athletic memory?
When we played Coeburn and I ran a kick return and a punt return back for a touchdown.
What is your worst athletic memory?
Probably when I pulled that hamstring. Because it hurt pretty good.
In a movie about your life, who would play you?
I'd say, The Rock. I like him.
If you were hosting a dinner party, who would be your three ideal guests?
Probably, it would be motocross rider Travis Pastrana. Probably Michael Jordan. And UFC Fighter Anderson Silva.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
Probably to heal people. To be able to heal yourself and other people, really fast.
Do you have any pregame superstitions or rituals?
Not really. I usually have Tyler Scott tape me up every time. That's about the only thing.
Do you have a nickname?
Several. Probably the one I hear most is "Cain Train." Some people call me "Deuce" because No. 2 is my football number. Coach Mooney calls me "C-Square" a lot.
What are your favorite hobbies?
I've got a dirt bike. I like four-wheeling and stuff like that. I like hunting. I'm a hunter. I coon hunt a lot. I like to deer hunt, turkey hunt. I like to fish. Coon hunting is probably my favorite. We don't stay out too late during the week. On the weekends, we can be out a while. We lost one dog in a cave one night, a big sinkhole. And we had to go down and get him.
