There is an exciting new camp for children coming to Kingsport this summer.

Colonial Heights Baptist Church and Chick-fil-A are partnering together to host the first WinShape Camp for Communities in the Tri-Cities.

The WinShape Camp for Communities is a day camp that offers a variety of options for children to pursue, along with the opportunity to experience Bible study and worship in one week.

S. Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A, started the WinShape camps in 1984 on the WinShape campus in Rome, Ga. The summer of 2008 started a new tradition for WinShape Camps with the introduction of WinShape Camps for Communities.

This summer, six traveling teams - each consisting of 24 faculty members - will bring the WinShape Camps to selected cities throughout the nation. All members of the teams are upper-level college or graduate students. They attend very intensive training sessions to prepare for their camp leadership roles.

Participants in the camp get to choose from a variety of skills to focus on for the week. A few of the skill options include: gymnastics, soccer, drama, digital photography, music, painting and basketball. This camp is designed to meet the interests of all children, while providing a Christian atmosphere. Children will build character, enjoy learning new skills and strengthen their Christian faith.

WinShape Camps are unique in the fact that they encourage family and community participation. Children attending the camp will also have the opportunity to learn about ways they can assist their local community.

The Kingsport WinShape Camps for Communities will take place at Colonial Heights Baptist Church, June 4-8, and will end with a Chick-fil-A Friday Family Fun Day. The camp times are from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Friday. Children who have completed grades 1-6 are eligible to attend. Parents can register their children online at www.winshapecamps.org and all payments are accepted through the website.

The cost of the camp is $184 and partial scholarships are available. The online registration site also allows flexible payment plans. Forms for the scholarships may be obtained by emailing whitlock@chbckingsport.org. Individuals may also contribute to the partial scholarships by contacting Greg Whitlock, associate pastor at Colonial Heights Baptist Church.

Snacks are provided each day, but children are required to bring a packed lunch or purchase a lunch provided by Chick-fil-A.

"There will be one adult for every 10 children and a nurse will be on-site all day every day," said Whitlock. "The volunteers, or team crew leaders, will come from the community and we are seeking more interested volunteers, especially nurses, to assist with the camp. Every volunteer will go through a required background check."

Colonial Heights Baptist Church has already signed up to host again next year.

"There is a huge return rate for children and satisfaction rate from parents for WinShape Camps," Whitlock said.
