KINGSPORT — One person was killed and another seriously injured Sunday evening as a result of a single-vehicle rollover accident that occurred on John B. Dennis Highway just past Moreland Drive.
The accident occurred around 6 p.m. Sunday as a southbound 2001 Mazda pickup was attempting to pass a slower vehicle.
Kingsport Police Department accident reconstructionist Dale Farmer said the Mazda entered the median just past the Moreland Drive intersection, and traveled about 200 feet before making a hard right across the southbound lanes of traffic into a steep embankment.
The pickup rolled one time, and as it landed on its wheels the male passenger was ejected.
Farmer said the passenger wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
The male passenger was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center, where police say he died from his injuries.
The female driver, who was wearing a seat belt, had to be extricated from the vehicle and Farmer said she was transported to HVMC with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The names of the two weren’t being released Sunday evening pending notification of family.
Farmer said speed was definitely a factor in the accident.
During the early stages of the investigation the attorney general’s office was called to the scene due to the likelihood that it would become a fatality.
Farmer said charges are pending.
