If you have ever looked around Kingsport and admired the clean environment, or noticed a group of newly-planted trees, you probably need to thank Keep Kingsport Beautiful, a partnership between the City of Kingsport and the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce.

Several popular events are held each year, including the Tree Fund Spring Planting, scheduled at noon on Friday, April 13. This year's planting will take place at the new Chamber of Commerce Offices on 400 Clinchfield Street.

Robin Cleary, director of Keep Kingsport Beautiful, said, "This program allows individuals to make a contribution in any amount in memorial or in honor of someone. During the tree planting ceremony, the name of each person honored is read, along with the name of each contributor."

The city-wide clean up, pick up and recycle week will continue through April 20.

Individuals can place out any item, except for hazardous materials and paint, to be picked up during the two-week period.

The Greenbelt Cleanup, sponsored by Indian Path Medical Center, will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, and The Downtown Cleanup will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, May 12.

Another popular event for the entire family is the Fun Fest Trash Barrel Paint-In. It will be held on July 10 at Allandale Mansion. Volunteers are always needed for the Fun Fest Trash Busters program and sign ups take place in June.

A well-known and anticipated program, going on for over 25 years, is the Beautification Awards sponsored by Blue Ridge Properties. Starting in May, 10 awards are given out each month to various properties. Keep Kingsport Beautiful is currently seeking additional volunteers to help judge for the Beautification Awards.

Keeping a community clean and beautiful requires participation from many different people. Individuals may become part of the Clean Team by making a monetary donation. All contributors are recognized on the website.
