March 21st, 2012 4:12 pm by Wes Bunch

COEBURN — U.S. Forestry Service and Virginia Department of Forestry crews are responding to a wildfire that began in the Wise County side of High Knob Wednesday afternoon.

According to the VDOF Abingdon office, the fire began around 2:30 on the Jaybird Branch area near Coeburn.

The size of the blaze —  which is located in the Jefferson National Forest and on private land — has not been determined.

Officials with the U.S. Forestry Service’s Clinch Ranger District said the fire was in the vicinity of several residences.

VDOF and U.S. Forestry officials said the wildfire was not related to controlled burns that were being carried out nearby.

Local volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze alongside forestry crews.
