UVA president outlines process to find chancellor for UVa-Wise

March 7th, 2012 10:23 pm by Steve Igo

WISE — University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan on Wednesday provided faculty, staff and students at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise a detailed description of the search process for a new chancellor.

Last month, highly regarded David J. Prior — the seventh chancellor at UVa-Wise — died of a heart attack during the seventh year of a tenure highlighted by a construction boom and regional prominence of the college.

Wednesday was Sullivan’s latest visit to UVa-Wise since Prior’s death, and while the reason is sad, “one silver lining has been being able to get to know the people at the college better,” she said.

While still mourning the late chancellor, Sullivan said university and college officials, and all else, must move forward even though replacing Prior is impossible.

“Nobody can really replace David,” she said, “because David was unique.”

A search committee headed up by UVa-Wise Board Chair Marcia Gilliam will be assisted by a professional search firm hired by UVA. Sullivan said the committee shall be composed of faculty, staff and student representatives as well as alumni and local community representatives.
