Police car clips man in wheelchair on Center Street

March 6th, 2012 10:55 am by staff report

Serious injury appears to have been avoided Tuesday morning when a police squad car clipped a man attempting to cross Center Street in a wheelchair.

The incident occurred at 7:20 a.m. on East Center Street near Forest Street. Kingsport Police Department Lt. Bob Abernathy reports a man who lives in the area was attempting to cross the busy street in his wheelchair. He reportedly rolled out in front of a passing police car, which clipped the chair and spun it around.

The man was thrown from the chair and transported to the hospital as a precaution. Lt. Abernathy reports no serious injuries were incurred in the incident.

Kingsport police report the Sullivan County Sherriff’s Office is investigating the collision.
