Kingsport woman killed in Sunday crash

March 5th, 2012 11:45 am by Rain Smith

A Sunday evening, two-vehicle traffic crash in Sullivan County killed a Kingsport woman and hospitalized two other people.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol reports Donna G. Mendenhall, 40, of Wembeck Drive, suffered fatal injuries in the head-on collision. It occurred at 6:15 p.m. on Highway 126, between Cooks Valley Road and Bridwell Heights Road — and less than a half mile from Mendenhall's home.

According to a report filed by Trooper Doug Brewer, Mendenhall was driving a 1997 Chevrolet westbound on Memorial Boulevard. Her passenger is identified as Scott Mendenhall, 47.

Police say the Mendenhalls' Chevrolet was struck by an eastbound 2001 Volkswagen. The vehicle, driven by Lavonia K. Boyd, 51 — of nearby Lana View Drive — had allegedly exited the right side of the roadway and overcorrected, prompting the head-on crash.

As of Monday afternoon both Boyd and Scott Mendenhall remained hospitalized at Holston Valley Medical Center. Wellmont spokesperson Jim Wozniak said Mendenhall was critical while Boyd was in serious condition.

An investigation of the incident is continuing with charges pending.
