A Washington County, Va., man has been arrested in the November death of a 6-month-old boy.
Ira Joe Green, age 20, of 16045 Mendota Road, Mendota, Va., is charged with second-degree murder. A press release from Washington County Sheriff Fred Newman reports the infant's death occurred Nov. 7 at Green's residence, when he was in care of the child.
At approximately 9 a.m. members of the life saving crew and Sheriff's Office responded to the home, in reference to the unresponsive infant. Police report life-saving measures were attempted, but the child was transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon and pronounced dead.
WCSO detectives launched an investigation and the infant’s body was transported to Roanoke for autopsy.
"The results of the autopsy were not consistent with statements taken during the interviews and the manner of death has been listed as a homicide," Sheriff Newman stated in a press release.
Green is held without bond in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon. He is scheduled for arraignment on Thursday.
Sheriff’s Detectives Scott Clear and Billy Nichols are conducting the investigation into the case. Police say second-degree murder is punishable by up to 40 in the state penitentiary.
