Infant suffers broken bones; mother's boyfriend faces abuse charges

Toby Edward Douglas, 20.

A Blountville man is accused of beating his girlfriend's infant son, who suffered multiple broken bones.

According to court records, Toby Edward Douglas, 20, 557 Highway 75, is accused of intentionally causing serious bodily injuries to a nine-month-old boy in October of 2011.

Sullivan County Assistant District Attorney Julie Canter said Tuesday that Douglas was the boyfriend of the child's mother, and not the alleged victim's father.  It's alleged he caused the child to suffer multiple broken bones, she said.

Douglas is charged with two counts of aggravated child abuse and one count each of aggravated child neglect and aggravated child endangerment. A Sullivan County grand jury returned sealed indictments against Douglas on these charges on Jan. 31.

He was released from the Sullivan County jail the day of his arrest after posting a $100,000 bond.
