'Cake Boss' Buddy Valastro coming to Bristol

November 20th, 2011 5:54 pm by staff report

For Buddy Valastro, mixing eggs, sugar, butter and flour mean a lot more than “making a cake.” As a fourth-generation baker, it’s a constant source of pleasure, pride and creativity. His mastery of fondant icing techniques and introduction of the art of designer cakes to a broader audience continues the Carlo’s Bakery legacy.

Valastro, star of the hit TLC reality show “Cake Boss,” will appear at 7 p.m., Dec. 1, at Viking Hall Civic Center as part of the Bristol Public Library’s Discovery Series. Tickets range from $23 to $78. Proceeds will fund programs of the Bristol Public Library. Tickets are available at the Viking Hall Box Office or online at www.vikinghall.com.

Valastro was born into Carlo’s Bakery, owned and operated by his parents. At an early age, Valastro showed that he was a natural by displaying his amazing talent for baking and cake decorating. Aside from that passion, he loved spending quality time with his father as his apprentice. Countless hours were spent in the bakery where Valastro’s father, a master baker, taught him all his old-world baking secrets. They were best friends and dreamed that together they would make Carlo’s Bakery a household name.

Unfortunately, at the age of 17, Valastro experienced the loss of his father, which led to more responsibilities being placed on his shoulders. He showed how well he could shine under pressure by continuing to produce quality work. Today, Valastro is an accomplished master baker and cake decorator and star of the hit TLC reality show “Cake Boss.” He and his staff turn out thousands of wedding cakes, specialty cakes and pastries every week.

Valastro’s first book, “Cake Boss: The Stories and Recipes from Mia Famiglia,” shares his family’s inspiring, fascinating, and poignant life story along with recipes for the bakery’s most popular treats.

A “Christmas with the Cake Boss” cake competition for professional and amateur bakers will be held prior to Valastro’s performance. With the theme “My Favorite Christmas Book,” there will be first-, second- and third-place winners in each division. Valastro will also choose a Best in Show. People who wish to vote for a People’s Choice award can do so by giving a $5 donation to the library foundation.
