October 29th, 2011 6:00 pm by staff report

The Kingsport Art Guild will open its 2011 Members Exhibit with a reception and awards ceremony from 2 to 4 p.m., today in the Renaissance Center’s second-floor gallery, where the show will remain on display through Nov. 28.

Those who attend today’s festivities will enjoy live music by Kathy Carmack and light refreshments as well as the opportunity to bid in a silent auction on creations donated by area artists. Both the awards reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public.

Peggy Root of the Root Studio School in Johnson City is judging this year’s exhibit, with winners splitting $1,150 in cash prizes. Eastman Credit Union funds KAG’s annual Members Exhibit. Other contributors include the Carl B. Jessee Art and Frame Shop in Bristol, Va., and Watercolor Artist magazine.

For the second year, Tri-Cities Waste Paper is sponsoring the Dallas Bernard Memorial Upcycle Award for a work that transforms something disposable into a work for greater use and value. The majority of materials for this work must have been previously used.

Faye Boushley, an artist and antiques dealer from Kingsport, is this year’s Members Exhibit chair.
