GATE CITY — Gate City and Virginia High were locked in a defensive struggle at Legion Field on Friday night, each waiting for the other to make the fatal mistake.
In the end, the Bearcats made it. The Blue Devils made good on it.
Tyler Bird followed up a fourth-quarter fumble recovery with a 36-yard scoring run, the first of two late touchdowns that sealed the Blue Devils’ 21-7 Clinch Mountain District victory.
“We just wanted to be in the fourth quarter with a chance and we were. But we didn’t get it done,” said Virginia High coach Paul Wheeler, whose troops went into the final stanza with high hopes and the game tied at 7.
