South shuts out Volunteer for third straight year

October 7th, 2011 11:59 pm by Dave Ongie

KINGSPORT — As the key play in Friday’s Big 8 Conference clash between Volunteer and Sullivan South unfolded, Rebels defensive back A.J. Hutchins read it like an open book.

With his team clinging to a 7-0 lead in the final minute of the second quarter, Hutchins jumped an out route, made an interception, and streaked 78 yards down the sideline and into the end zone.

The Rebels took a 13-0 lead into the locker room, the Falcons never recovered and South survived to score a hard-fought 20-0 victory on Homecoming in Death Valley.

While South’s offense struggled to find any consistency, the defense picked up the slack by forcing six turnovers and shutting out the Falcons for the third year in a row.
