An independent health care accreditation firm on Wednesday named four local hospitals, including three affiliated with Mountain States Health Alliance, to its list of 405 top U.S. performing medical facilities.

The Joint Commission’s annual report highlighting hospitals that meet its criteria in evidence-based care and positive patient outcomes had Indian Path Medical Center of Kingsport, Franklin Woods Community Hospital of Johnson City, the Veterans Administration James H. Quillen Medical Center at Mountain Home, and Russell County Medical Center of Lebanon, Va., among the selections.

“These hospitals achieved true excellence in accountability measure performance in 2010,” said Joint Commission President Dr. Mark Chassin in a teleconference held Wednesday afternoon. “We used specific criteria to identify the measures that when improved by hospitals led directly to improved outcomes for patients. ... Today, the public expects even greater transparency. They want to know how the hospitals where they receive care are performing, and this list of top performers provides information about performance related to heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, and children’s asthma care.”

The recognized hospitals must have collected a 95 percent performance rating in at least one of those five areas of specific care to qualify for the award.

Russell County and Franklin Woods achieved the threshold percentage in pneumonia care, and Indian Path met the criteria in four of the five examination areas excluding children’s asthma care.

The VA/Quillen Center gained high marks in care for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia.
