A Kingsport motorcyclist — allegedly spotted traveling Stone Drive at more than 120 mph — has been arrested after trying to elude police and being struck by a squad car.
The collision occurred at approximately 10 p.m. Thursday night on Bloomingdale Pike, at a back entrance to Dunkin' Donuts. Police say the rider was attempting to swerve into the parking lot when hit by the cruiser, which was traveling approximately 5 mph.
A Kingsport arrest report states the incident began approximately two miles away. An officer in the parking lot of an East Stone Drive business reportedly spotted a motorcycle pass at speeds in excess of 100 mph.
When the officer pulled onto westbound Stone Drive and activated his lights and siren, the motorcycle allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Pinebrook Drive. A second officer in the vicinity would report spotting the motorcycle, later identified as a 1996 Yamaha R6, traveling in excess of 120 mph.
Police say they followed the rider west until it turned right onto Bloomingdale Pike. A pursuing officer reports turning right onto Gibson Mill then stopping at the intersection with Bloomingdale.
The officer reports spotting the motorcycle in the parking lot of CVS. As he turned left onto Bloomingdale Pike to head that way, according to the report, the rider exited right out of the parking lot and began towards the squad car.
Police say the rider then turned sharply right, attempting to access a back entrance to the parking lot of Dunkin' Donuts. The officer reports turning left in an attempt to follow, but the squad car — traveling an estimated 5 mph—hit the left side of the motorcycle.
The motorcycle was knocked onto its right side, with the rider then standing up beside it and being apprehended. Dallas R. Morelock, 24, of 325 Donnie Crawford Road, Kingsport, was charged with evading arrest, reckless driving and failure to obey traffic control devices.
The report does not state if he was transported to the city jail or injured and required medical attention.
