Burlington deals blow to K-Mets' playoff hopes

August 21st, 2011 11:12 pm by staff report

KINGSPORT  —  The Burlington Royals dealt the K-Mets a double-whammy on Sunday night at Hunter Wright Stadium.

Not only did the Royals upend Kingsport 6-2, but the loss dropped the K-Mets (33-26) into third place in the Appalachian League’s West Division and out of a tie with Elizabethton in the race for a postseason playoff berth.

The Twins (34-25) downed Greeneville 9-3 to move one game ahead of Kingsport in the standings. Dustin Lawley gave the K-Mets’  fans something to cheer about in the first inning when he homered over the center field wall.

But the joy was short-lived as the Royals (21-38) hit three home runs over the next four innings  take a 5-1 lead.

Kingsport showed some signs of life in the seventh when Jonathan Clark walked and scored all the way from first on a  double by Jeffrey Glenn, but the rally died when the next two K-Mets failed to reach base.

The Royals added a run in the  ninth when Justin Trapp smacked another homer for the final margin of victory.

Kingsport will host Danville Monday night at 7 p.m.
