For the first five years of the production, Barbara Polly played the role of June Tolliver in what was later to become Virginia’s longest-running outdoor drama.
Today, Polly is the producer of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Official Outdoor Drama, “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine,” celebrating its 48th season. This year’s production continues through Aug. 27 in Big Stone Gap, Va.
“This has been a huge part of my life. I’ve been involved in some capacity since the beginning. Later, after playing the role of June Tolliver, I raised a family, but I was always involved with the play in different ways,” Polly said. “I feel like this story is so important to our community and its young people. It’s a part of our history and of how the coal business impacted people here. The coal business brought jobs to the area and helped to usher in the Industrial Revolution.”
