Grand slam by Stewart sparks Mets

July 23rd, 2011 5:33 am by George Thwaites

KINGSPORT — The Kingsport Mets made a lot of good things happen with marginal hits at Hunter Wright Stadium on Friday night. The good things Luke Stewart made happen weren’t marginal at all.

The K-Mets first baseman collected his first home run of the Appalachian League season with a two-out grand slam in the eighth inning and Kingsport went on to an 11-8 win over the Johnson City Cardinals.

“I just wanted to be aggressive and got a firstpitch fastball. A good pitch to hit. It ended up going over the fence,” said Stewart, whose blast near the flagpole in right field put Kingsport ahead 11-4.

“We know we’re a talented team. We know we have the right pieces in place. Before this homestand, things just weren’t going our way. We’d hit balls hard right at people and our pitchers would make good pitches and they’d get cheap hits.”

Stewart finished 2-for-3 with six RBIs, including a base rip that plated two runners in the third inning.
