Pinch hitter Moreno leads K-Mets to victory in bottom of the ninth

July 22nd, 2011 4:10 am by Pat Kenney

KINGSPORT — Kingsport Mets pinch hitter Nestor Moreno was Mr. Clutch on Thursday night at Hunter Wright Stadium.

Stepping to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded and his team trailing by a run, Moreno worked the count full before stroking a two-run single into right field to give the K-Mets a 7-6 win over the Johnson City Cardinals in an Appalachian League marathon game that lasted nearly four hours.

“Moreno has been a clutch hitter for us in the past,’’ Kingsport manager Frank Fultz said. “The pitch was up a little in the strike zone and he was able to get the ball in the air so both runners could score.’’

When Gregory Pron and Julio Concepcion crossed home plate with the tying and winning runs, the Mets’ bench rushed the field to raucous cheers from the home fans.
