KINGSPORT — A pack of 185 runners showed up to run with the wolves in Tuesday night’s fourth annual Fun Fest Wolf Run at Bays Mountain Park.
The wolves did all the howling. The humans did all the huffing and puffing.
George Tolton, a 19-year-old from Abingdon, proved the alpha male of the race. He completed the grueling 7-mile trail course first overall with a 43:56.
“I took it out pretty hard. My plan was just to stay with the leaders. I just felt like I went a little harder at the beginning before that big hill,” said Tolton, who made the Virginia Tech cross country team practice squad as a freshman walk-on but got cut. He intends to try out again this year.
Tolton was like most of the hard-core runners who comprised Tuesday’s field in that he also competed in Saturday’s Crazy 8s. He finished that 8K road race with a highly respectable 32nd overall timed at 27:19.
