Sullivan Gardens volunteer delivers meals for 18 years

July 17th, 2011 8:37 pm by Leigh Ann Laube

During his 18 years as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Bill Calhoun helped some Sullivan Gardens residents with more than just a friendly face and a hot meal.

“I found one lady in the floor with a heart attack, another turned over in their wheelchair,” he said. “I’ve found them just about every way you could think of.”

Calhoun, who will celebrate his 90th birthday in November, retired recently from the organization because of health issues.

“You don’t know how bad it hurt me when I had to quit. I had an operation, and at my age, they said it’s time for me to quit,” he said. “I love the people.”

Calhoun spent three and a half years in the Army, and another 37 years at Eastman, the last 17 in research. When he retired, he began looking for a volunteer opportunity.
