KINGSPORT — The ambient temperature for the 22nd running of the Indian Path Medical Center & Sun Trust Bank Crazy 8s 8K run was unusually cool Saturday night.
Shadrack Kosgei successfully defended his 2010 Crazy 8s championship. And that was also unusually cool.
“It was like a once-in-a-lifetime night. We looked at 65 degrees during the race, which is ideal. The humidity actually lifted a bit,” said co-race director Hank Brown.
The 26-year-old Kenyan came within 18 seconds of the world record as he clocked a 22:21.3 to collect the $5,000 Gastroenterology Associates Dash for the Gold for the second consecutive year.
“I’m really very happy defending my title today. I was not sure I would win because I was feeling a little bit bad,” said Kosgei, who was a teenager in 2001 when he came within three seconds of Peter Githuka’s longstanding 22:03.
