Scott County explores 'virtual school' program

GATE CITY — Scott County Public Schools could be the next system in Southwest Virginia to have its own “virtual school” after officials entered into discussions earlier this month with the company that would administer the program.

The Scott County Board of Education voted unanimously at its July meeting to let interim Superintendent John Ferguson begin negotiations with K12 Medallion, Inc., the nation’s largest for-profit online education provider.

“We still have some unanswered questions,” Ferguson said. “I’ve been in contact with K12 about this and we’re just still trying to iron out a few things. If it pans out and looks to be a suitable program, we will probably look at expanding it for the future.”

If a deal is reached, K12 would administer the “virtual school” on a year-to-year basis for students in grades K-8. The program is geared to provide a comprehensive education to students outside of a traditional classroom setting.

Instruction would take place online, and K12 would furnish its own materials and teachers, Ferguson said.
