SPARTA, Ky. — For the majority of the inaugural Quaker State 400, Kyle Busch had the field covered.

A flurry of late cautions created some drama, but Busch was able to finish what he started at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday night.

Busch outdueled Jimmie Johnson on the final restart of the race, which came with three laps remaining. He cleared the five-time Sprint Cup champion in the exit of turn two and sailed away to his third Cup win of the season. Busch led 125 laps en route to his 99th victory in NASCAR’s top three touring series.

Busch also left Kentucky with the series points lead, a four-point advantage over Carl Edwards.

“We stayed up front all the night and made it seem easy, but it wasn’t,” Busch said. “There in the end there were a couple of tense moments, but we prevailed. It was a special event and we felt the energy all weekend.
