KINGSPORT — Basketball teams traveled from all across the nation to participate in this week’s AAU Sixth Grade Girls National Championship in the Model City. But it was the Knoxville-based Flight Select Navy that stole the show. Using relentless full-court pressure and 14 points from Morristown’s Blayke Shultz, Flight Select upended the Missouri Valley Magic 41-26 on Friday at Dobyns-Bennett’s Buck Van Huss Dome to capture the national crown.
From the outset, Flight Select smothered Missouri Valley with end-to-end pressure. When the Magic did manage to get across halfcourt, most of the 30-second clock had been used up, leaving little time to shoot. Shultz drained a 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter to give Flight Select a 14-4 lead. All four of Missouri Valley’s first-quarter points came on free throws. But shaking off the pressure in the second quarter, the Magic rallied to within 20-19 by the halftime break.
“I really thought when we got close we could make a game of it,’’ said Missouri Valley coach Allen Wilson.
