'Battles at Wise' Civil War re-enactment kicks off today

WISE — The fifth annual “Battles at Wise” Civil War re-enactment will take place today and Sunday in Wise. All events are free and open to the public.


The annual re-enactment of actual events in and around Wise during the Civil War begins at 10 a.m. today, with re-enactor camps open to the public. Camps will be open through 6 p.m. Sutlers will be open for shopping, and living history demonstrations, blacksmithing, military drills, and a field hospital mockup will be available. Re-enactors will share knowledge of the daily routines of people of the period, and the public is encourage to engage in conversation with the re-enactors.


From noon through 1 p.m. will be a Ladies Tea with hostess Trish Rigg, refreshments courtesy of Food City. “Snoops in Hoops,” a story of ladies who risked all to support their cause, will be a part of the program. The tea will be held in The Tavern on Main Banquet Room. Ladies only, and seating is limited to 75.


From 1:30 to 4 p.m., Civil War scholars will present “The Civil War in the Mountains” at the campgrounds at L.F. Addington Middle School. Presenters will include Brian D. Wills, director of the Civil War Center at Kennesaw State University, and Brian D. McKnight, a professor of history, historian and author at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Bring your own lawn chair.
