BRISTOL, Va. — Finishing under the cover of darkness, Clarksville’s Lane Hite had the spotlight all to himself.
Hite shot a 6-under-par 65 Tuesday to take the first-round lead in stroke-play qualifying at the 98th annual Virginia State Golf Association’s amateur at The Virginian.

Fairfax’s Danny Kim was second after a 66 followed by Patrick Scheil of Williamsburg and Michael Smith of Harrisonburg, both with 67s.
Three-time defending champion Brinson Paolini from Virginia Beach was tied for 13th after a 1-under 70.
