POUND — The movie “Hoosiers” was only two years old when the Pound girls basketball team gathered in a motel room in Salem to watch it on a VCR one of the assistant coaches thought to bring along.

The next day, life imitated art. The Lady Wildcats beat Buffalo Gap 46-44 to win the 1988 Group A state championship.

In retrospect, perhaps it wasn’t as big a shocker as Hickory High beating South Bend Central. Starters Cricket Adams, Kelly Sturgill and Missy Boggs were all 1,000-point scorers.

“I thought we had an even better team when those girls were juniors. But they’d been together a long time and they were really good players. We really believed we could win it,” said Jerry Wolfe, who coached at Pound for 27 years, 20 seasons as girls basketball coach.
