BRISTOL, Va. — A three-hour bus ride and two-hour rain delay were of little consequence to James River in the VHSL Group A girls state soccer quarterfinals Tuesday at Sugar Hollow Park.
The Lady Knights used two goals by junior midfielder Heather Reynolds to subdue Gate City 2-1 and advance to Friday’s state semifinals in Radford.
James River (12-5) took the lead just 12 minutes into the contest when the Lady Blue Devils (16-2) failed to clear a corner kick. Reynolds eyed the loose ball and, in full stride, pounded it into the back of the Gate City net.
“It was just luck that it came right to me,’’ Reynolds said.
With just under 15 minutes to go in the half, Mother Nature took over. Lightning stopped the game and it was exactly two hours before the teams could begin play again.
