BRISTOL, Va. — John Battle’s Kara Rutherford stroked a three-run homer in the fourth inning to lift the Lady Trojans to a 3-0, rain-shortened win over Lee High on Tuesday in the Clinch Mountain District softball tournament semifinals at the Belle Meadows complex.
Rutherford’s timely dinger came just before Mother Nature threw a curveball at the game. Lightning stopped play with the Lady Generals batting in the top of the sixth. Wind, rain and more lightning soon followed and an already-saturated infield became a muddy mess. Officials called the game, giving Battle (14-4) a ticket into the district final.
The second semifinal between No. 1 Virginia High and Lebanon was pushed to Thursday at 6 p.m., and the consolation and championship games moved to Saturday.
A light rain fell on the Belle Meadows complex prior to the start of the game, adding to already treacherous conditions, but Lee coach Mike Twigg and Battle’s Ike Anderson agreed to attempt to get in the game.
