Scouts prepare for Expo, busy summer

May 2nd, 2011 1:22 am by Leigh Ann Laube

Thousands of Boy Scouts will descend upon the Appalachian Fairgrounds in Gray this weekend for the 2011 Scout Expo, an event that gives them the chance to camp, earn patches and show off their Scouting skills to the public.

The scout camping area opens at 5 p.m., Friday, with the opening ceremony scheduled for noon, Saturday.

The scouts will participate in a worship service at 8 a.m., Sunday, and will leave the fairgrounds by 11 a.m.

Sponsored by the Sequoyah Council Boy Scouts of America, the event is open to the public. Scouts will display skills in fire building, recycling, knot tying, cooking techniques, rope bridge building, archery and orienteering. The expo is an important fund-raiser for the council as well as the scouts and units that belong to the council.

A number of other activities will keep scouts busy this spring and summer.
