ROGERSVILLE — Never mind their win-loss records. Cherokee (6-17) and Volunteer (8-14) went after each other with a vengeance on the baseball field Friday night.
Typical of most Hawkins County showdowns, the non-conference game went down to the wire.
Cherokee won 2-1, compliments of Roy Hicks — one of only three seniors on his team.
Hicks, a 6-foot-1, 145-pound right-hander, pitched a four-hitter and struck out eight batters. However, he decided the game with his bat, singling home the winning run in the eighth inning.
