KINGSPORT — At least a half-dozen major league scouts were among the several hundred baseball fans who braved the cold Tuesday night to watch Dobyns-Bennett play Science Hill.
The Hilltoppers won 6-4 but not without an eventful battle at J. Fred Johnson Stadium. D-B collected 10 hits off fireballing left-hander Daniel Norris, the pitcher the scouts came to see.
Still, Science Hill (8-6, 6-1) strengthened its Big 8 Conference baseball lead with another close win over D-B (8-4, 4-2).
Norris (2-1), who threw 117 pitches, was credited with the mound win and it was his hitting that sealed the victory. He homered in the final inning to drive in an insurance run.
The 190-pound senior, expected to be an early-round choice in the June free agent draft, earned the decision with a stout- hearted performance in the sixth inning. He struck out Reid Mathews and Nathan Millsap, D-B’s Nos. 3 and 4 hitters in the lineup, with the bases loaded. All told, he fanned 10 in six innings.
