It’s not easy getting selected to the Times-News Elite boys basketball team. Duplicating the honor is a tall order.
It didn’t happen this year. Not once.
This year’s roster of six includes three juniors — Cherokee’s James Scales, J.J. Kelly’s Aaron Clark and Science Hill’s Jaylen Allen — and one sophomore — Sullivan North’s Chase Arnold.
Two seniors — Gate City’s Paul Arnold and Dobyns-Bennett’s Tyler Ailshie — have ended their high school careers on a high note.
Coaches from Northeast Tennesse and Southwest Virginia provided nominations. The team was then selected by members of the Times-News staff.
James Scales, Cherokee
When Scales appeared on the Chiefs’ roster as a freshman, he was chiefly a ball handler and a pass distributor. Between his sophomore and junior seasons, however, he became something remarkable.
Scales added the outside element to his game and it changed him altogether. His coaches attribute his dramatic transformation to an extraordinary work ethic.
